There has been a lot of talk about Australia’s housing supply problem, construction costs, tax changes, builder pressure, labour shortages, and whether we are anywhere near building enough homes to meet demand (We aren't)
But from the buyer side, it feels like the conversation is missing something obvious.
It is not just about how many homes get built. It is also about the quality of what gets handed over.
A lot of families are already stretching themselves to afford land, construction costs, rent during delays, interest rate increases, variations, and final payments. Then when the house is finally finished, they are left dealing with defects, poor finishes, water issues, cracking, doors not closing properly, rushed work, and months of chasing builders just to get basic items fixed.
So my question is:
If the industry is under pressure to build faster and cheaper, are ordinary buyers the ones carrying the risk?
Are we heading toward a situation where Australia pushes for more housing supply, but quality control gets worse?
Australia needs more homes, but it also needs homes that are actually finished properly.
